Life Changing Essay In life, we all know something that has changed the way we perceive people and events. Most meaningful events that have changed our perception can be our experience that we have gone through and learned from. Life-changing experiences play an important role on our development. Whether adults or children, we are affected by our experience which could impact us immensely. Personally speaking, my previous experience have affected me significantly. One is my first job experience, the other is my first-time experience of living in a brand-new country. Firstly, my first job experience greatly affected me. I remember that I was working at a Taiwanese restaurant. It was a really busy restaurant with five to eight employees. My manager told me that being a good waiter, it is important to smile and have a good attitude. I was not doing a great job on my first day of work. I was not really happy, because I made a lot of mistake, including messing up customer’s orders, no smiling, and a bad service attitude. I was judged by my manager. However, I believed that practice would lead to improvement and I never gave up, keep learning and practicing the working skills. After that, I became a mature and efficient waiter. In addition to above experience, communication and co-operation are also what I learned on my job. For example, when I served my customers for the first time, I was too shy to talk. But the most important thing for a waiter to know about is customers’ needs and expectations. Lack of communication with customers will not achieve this. After working for one month, I learned how to communicate with my customers. Furthermore, co-operation between co-workers is also important. I learned how to work with other waitresses/waiters and understood more about teamwork. This man locked between four walls, has all the time to relive the crime, his horrible mistake that sent him to jail. Deprived of liberty, he remembers what life was like when he was free. Every second he spent outside those walls. All the people who cared for him. He was never grateful for the life he was living. It used to be no bars, no chains,no guards to wake you up in the morning. Now that time has changed as they even tell him when to bath. Sitting in the dark, watching miniature shadows creep by.These little beasts lurk in his room and become his only friends, he start talking to them, yelling at them, until they turned him mad! But then a breeze fortunately wakes you from his insanity, it makes him feel alive, the cold breeze awakens his senses. Suddenly he smells the shame brought upon himself. He feels the guilt weighing on his shoulders. He tasted the bitterness of his actions. He hears the screams over and over again until the images come back to haunt him again.As the g ushes of wind crash against the building, he smell the freshly cut grass, he see the branches, the leaves,and tries to remember the taste of berries hanging of the tree. It was standing there outside his reach, the figure breathed slowly and continuously as the rocking head looked at him purposely, it started pointing straight at him, mocking him because he is free. To evade reality, is now a nesesity. His insanity is making him angry. He needs too let himself cool off, but being locked up alone is the same as being locked in your mind.With no one to talk too he needs to look within for answers and comfort. He needs someone to to look forward in seeing again. He loves her but sometimes forgets she is there waiting. But this night the cold wind blows through his cell. The stone so cold he thought he was going to freeze. He decided to make the next four years of his life a time to learn and grow. Instead of letting himself go to the icy night he wanded to feel alive. He wanted to have something to look forward to.She was the one who was going to guide him to freedom. In the prison yard, they weren't isolated from the wind that creeped through your neck during the walk. This used to irritate him but now he has learned to embrace it. That feeling, rushing through his veins, the hairs on his arms stand on end, that shiver does not weaken him, on the contrary it makes him alive. That is what he has learned to embrace because it is one of the last feelings he is able to look forward to since love is so far out of reach.

This sport is not unlike any other sport in the area that it involves a great deal of physics. However, this paper will focus on the aspect of bowling the ball and the batters reaction to this. When comparing Cricket to other sports that most Americans know, the closest match that can be found is baseball. For example, a ball is thrown toward someone with a bat, and the person with the bat attempts to hit the ball outside of a set boundary. Also, the scoring system is cricket is based upon runs. Sounds very similar to baseball, right? Well, it is much like baseball, but the terminology used is different. For example, in baseball, the person who throws the ball is called a pitcher, but in cricket, this person is called a bowler. In contrast, the person who hits the ball with a bat is called a batter, however, a bat in cricket is much different than a bat in baseball. In baseball the bat is round, but in cricket the bat is shaped like a long paddle, meaning it is flat on two sides. First comes the batter when preparing for a game. A controversy that arises in both cricket and baseball alike is the question of â€Å"what size bat should be used? † The answer to this question is, whatever size allows you to put the most possible velocity while making the ball soar off at around a 45-degree angle. This depends on what bat a person is comfortable with. For example, a person might be able to swing a light bat at 45m/s but a heavier bat at 38m/s, therefore in theory the lighter bat would take a ball further because it has more velocity to transfer to the ball, right? Not quite, a heavier bat packs much more momentum and energy, so the force from that would make the ball go further, so the trick is actually swinging the heaviest bat that feels comfortable to swing, because when trying to hit the ball out of the field, this power comes in very handy. The bowler’s role is much different from the batter’s. The bowler’s objective is to get the ball past the batter and hit the wicket, the target that the batter is protecting. One way to approach this feat is to throw the ball as fast as possible without any spin past the batter in hopes that hey will miss and the ball will luckily hit the wicket, but this theory does not work all of the time. For this reason we have another approach, using spin. Since the bowler must bounce the ball, the bowler can make the ball switch directions, increase or even decrease in speed very quickly. While the first technique uses only two dimensions, this technique uses three dimensions. By adding spin to the left, the ball in result will kick to the left when bounced, and the same is true if spin were added to the right, it would kick right very sharply. To cause a ball to kick forward, topspin must be added to the ball, meaning, the ball will be spun in a forward direction. This causes the ball to dive toward the ground, then when it bounces, dive forward at a more reduced angle than what it entered, therefore the ball comes in closer to the ground. Backspin is added by, as you begin your bowl, spinning the ball backward as it is thrown. This causes a slight â€Å"glide† through the air, because of air resistance, and upon impact with the ground, the ball will bounce up at a lesser angle than without spin. Therefore, in contrast to topspin, if it hit the ground in the same place, a ball with backspin would get to the batter at a higher height than would a ball with no spin implied. Next, we have the angle at which the ball hits the ground. With no spin implied, the ball will project itself, or bounce, away from the ground at the same angle it entered. Even though the height at which the ball approaches the batter relies on speed, it also relies heavily on the angle of the bounce. In cricket, all bowlers have, depending upon height of the bowler, around the same place that the ball leaves their hand. Because of this, the angle at which the ball strikes the ground depends on how close or how far away the bowler aims for the ball to hit. If the bowler has measured out how far the place where he plans to bounce the ball, we can calculate the angle at which the ball will strike the ground, and then calculate at what height the ball approaches the batter. However, adding topspin or backspin to a ball defies this. As said earlier, topspin causes the ball to bounce at a lesser angle than normal, depending upon the rate of spin. Tubman was considered such a threat to the slave system that plantation owners offered a $40,000 reward for her capture. The "Stations" were safe places in which slaves rested and prepared to journey on. They were usually Twenty miles apart. The conductors were the people who owned the safe houses, or led the slaves to freedom. The conductors would use things like covered wagons, or carts with false bottoms to secretly carry the slaves from one station to another. Usually hiding by day and traveling by night. Things such as a candle burning in a window marked the stations, or lanterns positioned in the front lawn. By the middle of the 19th century it was estimated that over 50,000 slaves had escaped from the South using the Underground Railroad. Comparing America And Asias Elderly Care Social Work Essay In general, society considers the elderly as persons above the ages of sixty or sixty-five. This is usually the beginning of old age as a person becomes less active in political, social and economic affairs. Though there are elderly persons who are in good health and active members of their communities, majority are the ones whose physical and mental functions are on the decline. Since they are not able to get along on their own, majority of the elderly persons require attention and care from their loved ones as well as friends. Consequently, psychologists use the term elderly care to refer to the personal as well as medical attention that this group of the population receives. It is evident that elderly care takes a variety of forms, ranging from personal care such as feeding and dressing, to medical attention. In addition, the care that a family chooses for its elderly persons will depend on their needs. This is because some of the elderly persons may still be in good health while others may be frail. Consequently, some of them may require home-based care while others may need specialized attention in a nursing home or in a hospital. Whatever the case, the elderly do need some form of care. In this study, I shall focus on the American culture and the Asian culture, and make comparisons between the two, in relation to the aspect of caring for the elderly. For the Asian culture, I shall examine the Japanese. In both United States of America and Japan, the number of elderly persons is on the increase. This means that both governments have to consider and put in place the best mechanisms to cater for this group of the population. Different communities accord the elderly different forms of care, depending on how their cultures dictate. The way a community perceives old age will therefore affect the manner in which it treats the elderly. The responsibility of caring for the elderly in Caucasian and Japanese cultures lies mainly with the woman, because these societies consider her as an innate caregiver due to her maternal abilities and instincts. However, this is also due to the fact that, over the years, the woman has fewer opportunities in the economic scene, and as a result, she remains at home most of the time to take care of her children and the elderly. On the other hand, when the woman is able to access the labor market, she finds herself in positions where she has to provide care for others. Most nurses, school and hospital matrons are women. However, in the above cultures, children also participate in elderly care, as a form of compensation for the nurture their parents gave them when they were young. The American society places a lot of emphasis on staying young. Consequently, as Samovar et. al. (2009) notes we find a culture that prefers youth to old age. (p.71). This negative perception of old age makes the young people avoid staying together with the elderly and caring for them. The older adult population rather than the young adults are the ones taking care of the elderly. This explains why some families in the United States give over their old relatives to nursing homes. This does not however mean that the young cut all their links with their elderly relatives. They do provide support and maintain contact with them. The nursing homes are an option for the elderly people who have no family or relatives to look after them at home. This is especially the case for those who are physically handicapped and require the help of another person to take care of them. Though the nursing homes have become the choice for most families with elderly relatives, they do have their limitations. Some of these institutions for the elderly have become money-making ventures, therefore reducing their emphasis on the needs of the elderly. Poor hygiene and lack of trained medical personnel and quality treatment as well as poor feeding programs are some of the problems the elderly face in these nursing homes. Moreover, placing the elderly in nursing homes limits their freedoms as they have to follow the stipulated program. They cannot choose when to feed, sleep, interact with their fellow housemates and cannot keep their belongings. However, nursing homes for the elderly still remain the option for most American families, as there has not been much success with home-based care. On a positive note, the elderly persons in American society have more groups of friends and neighbors whom they can go to for support, than the aged people in Japanese society. This means that the American elderly are likely to receive care from their friends and neighbors, apart from their immediate family members. However, the Americans usually tend to give special care to their elderly only after they learn that the latter are facing a medical problem. However, since the family is still the main caregiver for the elderly, some of the American families employ professional nurses to take care of their old at home, instead of sending them away to nursing homes. Another reason for this is that, institutions for taking care of the elderly are expensive, and some of these families are not able to afford them. Moreover, some families opt to take their elderly to day nursing institutions, where they receive care throughout the day and then return home in the evening. This is suitable for those people who are working and cannot stay with the elderly relatives during the day as they have to report to work. It is also convenient for working adults who cannot afford specialized care for their elderly ones, either at home or in a nursing institution. In some instances, the elderly person may be able to live in his or her own house, and may be strong enough not to require specialized attention and care. In such cases, the family members of such an elderly person find a house near other aged people, in areas where the amenities they need on a day-to-day basis are readily available. This form of elderly care appeals to the community and involves them in taking responsibility for this group of the population. On the economic front, some of the big corporate organizations have introduced benefit schemes for their employees, in order to help them in caring for their elderly relatives. This is because most companies want to avoid losses in production, due to having employees who have to work while at the same time take care of their elderly relatives. Some companies also provide home-based care services for the elderly, but as a profit-making venture. This however, has a negative side to it as these privatized services are costly and not many families are able to afford them. On the other hand, Asian culture of the Japanese has a positive perception of the elderly. It teaches the children to respect and care for the elderly. The Japanese consider the family as the prime caregiver for their elderly, and in this case, it is usually a female member of the family who carries out this duty. This is because the Japanese believe that it is not in order to take the elderly to a nursing home as this is equivalent to neglecting ones responsibility of taking care of ones parents. This also makes the Japanese families give the required care to their elderly relatives throughout their old age, rather than only when they are facing a health problem. In the case of aged people who are not related to the family, Japanese wives or their daughters are the ones who tend to give their elderly friends the care they need. Sometimes, the daughters-in-law also give care to the elderly, especially if the patient is female. However, if other friends and non relatives are living under the same roof with the elderly persons, they may provide the necessary care to the latter. This is in contrast to the case of the American elderly who receive care from their family as well as friends and neighbors. In Japan, the activity of giving care to the elderly is mainly as an act of duty, rather than voluntary will. The caregiver considers this act as one that he or she has to give, and in most cases, the Japanese wife will provide the elderly attention at her husbands request. The dependence of the Japanese elderly on their immediate family is also evident in the fact that most of them rely on their spouses and their children for financial support. There are very simple ways to protect ourselves from the sun. A hat is useful and sunglasses make it easier on our eyes. One often overlooked alternative is sunscreen. Why don’t more people use it? This study found that roughly only half of the people who sunbathe with any frequency use sunscreen. When broken down into demographics, one can see that the percentages are lower for the 16-25 year old group than in any other group interviewed (Koh). These numbers clearly indicate that not enough young people are using sunscreen. Why not? Any person that looks at me can tell that I’m too Irish from my own good. While this may have an advantage or two, it presents a serious problem in an environment like Miami. Someone like me cannot last long in this sun. How do I protect myself for extended periods of time? That’s right, SPF 50. Go on, laugh, but I have never burned when I have used it. What about other, less Irish people? At the end of August I took a trip to South Beach with a group of seven people. There were several Miami natives, but others hailed from the North. Yet only I wore sunscreen. In June a dozen of my friends and I went on a week-long trip to Ocean City. After the first day at the beach, nine of my friends suffered from sun poisoning and spent the majority of the trip indoors. So why don’t kids use sunscreen? Is it something that comes with maturity?
